Powder Coating: A Strong Finish

As the name implies, finishing is the last part of the metal manufacturing process. This important step not only makes the product look good but also provides protection, decreases maintenance, and increases shelf life.

In the powder coating process, a powder, comprised of pigments, leveling agents, flow modifiers, and other ingredients, becomes negatively charged as it travels through a spray gun. Electrostatically applied to a grounded surface, the powder melts when heated, to chemically form a strong and long-lasting finish.

Durability

Thicker than paint, powder coating offers a harder surface with increased resistance to chipping, scratching, and wear. Powder coating does not rust, and will prevent peeling, cracking, and chemical exposure. Additionally, color retention is longer than most paints.

Consistency

Powder coating offers one of the most consistent finishes for metal. The electrostatic process guarantees an evenly distributed layer, yielding superior protection for complex shapes. The over-sprayed powder can even be collected and reused.

Versatility

A wide variety of metal surfaces, including steel, aluminum, brass, and copper can be powder coated. In addition, the powder coating line is able to provide a range of colors, textures, and finishes, making it an ideal choice for a multitude of applications.

Ease of Maintenance

Because of increased durability, the need to maintain powder-coated products decreases dramatically. Powder coating reduces the need for frequent re-coating, and with increased protection, part replacement is minimized.

Environmentally Safe

Perhaps the biggest advantage of powder coating is its negligible impact on the environment. Producing no volatile organic compounds, like benzene and formaldehyde, powder coating is generally considered non-toxic, which is why it is recommended for finished products used indoors. With no solvents required in the process, harmful fumes and the hazardous waste of used solvents and discarded paint are eliminated.

Although traditional paint finishing is a popular option, powder coating offers an array of advantages, which make this dry finishing process the preferred option over traditional solvent-based wet paint applications for most kinds of metals.
