How to Begin a Career in Manufacturing

To kickstart a career in sheet metal manufacturing, the most common path is through an apprenticeship program, which blends hands-on training with classroom learning. While in high school, a focus on subjects like algebra, geometry, blueprint reading, and welding can give you a significant advantage.

Alternatively, you could consider specialized training from a technical school. Some manufacturers also offer on-the-job training for entry-level hires.

Here’s a more detailed look at your options:

High School Preparation

Talk to your school counselor about career pathways that align with the manufacturing industry. Prioritize math classes (like algebra and geometry) and vocational subjects such as mechanical drawing and welding. You might also explore internship programs offered by your high school to gain early exposure to manufacturing careers.

Post-High School Pathways
  • Apprenticeship: A 4-5 year apprenticeship is a highly recommended route. These programs combine paid on-the-job training with relevant classroom instruction, providing a comprehensive skill set.

  • Technical School: Explore sheet metal fabrication programs at technical schools. These programs offer focused training and can prepare you for entry-level positions.

  • On-the-Job Training: Some companies are willing to hire individuals with little to no experience and provide on-the-job training. This can be a good option if you prefer to learn directly in a work environment.

No matter which path you choose, a career in sheet metal manufacturing offers diverse opportunities for skilled individuals. By combining practical skills with a strong understanding of the trade, you can build a rewarding and stable career.
